Can You Claim Trading Fees in Your TFSA? Ottawa CPA Explains

April 19, 2026

If you’re an investor in Ottawa wondering whether you can claim trading fees in your Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA), you’re not alone. As a CPA firm in Ottawa, we often get this question from clients looking to maximize their tax savings.

Are TFSA Trading Fees Tax Deductible? No, you cannot claim or deduct trading fees, commissions, or administration fees paid within your TFSA on your personal tax return.

The logic is that you're earning (or losing) investment income in the stock market tax free. That's what the TF stands for in TFSA. So the same logic has to apply to your trading fees.

The Income Tax Act specifically prohibits the deduction of any fees for services related to a TFSA, including investment counsel or trading fees.

This rule applies whether you pay the fees directly or they are withdrawn from your TFSA account.

Why Not? The main benefit of a TFSA is that all investment income and capital gains earned inside the account are tax-free.

Since you don’t pay tax on TFSA earnings, you also can’t claim any expenses related to generating that income.

What Should Ottawa Investors Do?

Track your TFSA contributions and withdrawals to avoid overcontributions and penalties.

Focus on maximizing your TFSA’s tax-free growth rather than seeking deductions for fees.
